About the Experience

This 14-day programme is based on Ilha de Moçambique, a UNESCO World Heritage island where volunteers support a community centre for children while engaging in permaculture, environmental action, and creative education. Students live close to the Heartseed centre, help run daily activities for around 60 children, and experience the island’s unique mix of African, Arab, Portuguese and Indian influences.

Base: Shared volunteer accommodation near the Heartseed centre, with breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack provided daily.

Educational and recreational support for children: games, English conversation, sports, reading, arts and crafts, and emotional support for ~60 children.

Permaculture and community garden work in the machamba, including soil preparation, replanting, composting, pruning, and irrigation.

Environmental action: beach clean-ups, waste separation, recycling and reuse activities, fortress and public-space cleaning.

Sustainable production workshops such as soap and recycled-paper making, upcycling, and eco-crafts.

Communication and storytelling support (for interested students): photography, video, storytelling, and campaign content.
